Every self-drive rental in India comes with basic third-party + own-damage insurance. But there is always a deductible — starting from a base amount that scales up by car class — the renter pays this out of pocket in case of damage. Add the zero-deductible rider (small per-day premium that varies by car class) for any trip longer than a day, and your liability drops to zero. Exact figures are shared with your custom quote.
What Standard Insurance Actually Covers
Every car rented through a registered operator in India must have:
- Third-party liability cover — covers damage you cause to other vehicles, property, or people. Mandatory by law, included in every rental.
- Own-damage (OD) cover — covers damage to the rental car itself in case of accident, fire, theft, vandalism, or natural calamity.
- Personal accident cover for driver — limited cover (typically ₹15 lakh) for the registered driver in case of injury.
For Carsavaar specifically, all cars carry comprehensive insurance with these covers active. The renter inherits the same protection as the owner — but with two important catches.
The Two Things Insurance Does NOT Cover
1. The deductible (your out-of-pocket)
Every insurance policy has a "deductible" — an amount the policyholder must pay before the insurance kicks in. For rental cars in India, deductibles are starting-from figures that vary by operator and car class — Carsavaar's exact deductible is confirmed with your quote. Typical industry bands:
| Car Class | Standard Deductible (starting from) | Real-World Example |
|---|---|---|
| Hatchback / Sedan | ₹3,000 – ₹5,000 | Bumper scratch ₹4,000 → you pay ₹4,000 |
| SUV / MUV | ₹5,000 – ₹8,000 | Door dent ₹6,000 → you pay ₹6,000 |
| Premium / Luxury | ₹10,000 – ₹25,000 | Alloy rim damage ₹18,000 → you pay ₹15,000 |
2. Specific exclusions
- Driving under influence of alcohol/drugs — full liability on driver, no insurance support
- Driving without valid licence at time of accident — full liability
- Off-road / racing use — explicitly excluded in standard policies
- Damage from neglect — running engine without oil, ignoring temperature warnings, etc.
- Damage to interior — spills, burns, tears typically charged separately, not covered by motor insurance
- Tyres and tubes — punctures and tyre damage from kerb hits often not covered
- Loss of belongings — your phone, laptop, luggage are not covered by car insurance
- Driving outside agreed area — insurance void if you cross state borders without notifying operator
The Zero-Deductible Rider — Should You Add It?
Most operators including Carsavaar offer an optional zero-deductible add-on priced as a small per-day premium starting from a base rate that scales with car class. With this added:
- Your damage liability drops to zero for covered events
- No documentation hassle if there is a small accident
- Peace of mind on long trips and unfamiliar terrain
Skip the rider when…
- Trip is 1 day, low-traffic city
- You drive daily and have insurance experience
- Low-cost hatchback rental
- Daily rate already tight
Add the rider when…
- Trip is 2+ days or outstation
- Hill stations, ghats, narrow roads
- First-time self-driver in this city
- Premium / luxury rental
- Carrying family or guests
The Security Deposit — Different from Insurance
Renters often confuse insurance with the security deposit. They are two separate things:
- Insurance: a third-party financial cover that pays for accident damage, with deductible.
- Security deposit: a refundable amount the operator holds to cover the deductible, traffic fines, late returns, fuel shortages, or interior damage. Starting from a base amount that scales with car class — exact figure shared with your quote.
On return, the deposit is refunded after deducting any of the above. Carsavaar processes most refunds within 24-48 hours. See full deposit details and refund process.
What To Do If You Have An Accident
The order of actions matters — follow this sequence:
- Stop, assess, ensure safety. Move passengers to a safe location away from the road. Switch on hazard lights.
- Check for injuries. If anyone is hurt, call ambulance (102) immediately. Photograph injuries only after medical care is initiated.
- Call the operator's emergency number. Carsavaar support is available 24×7 on the number provided in your rental agreement. They will guide you on next steps.
- Do NOT move the vehicles until you have photographic evidence — even if you are blocking traffic. Take photos from all angles, license plates of involved vehicles, road conditions, signage.
- File an FIR if required. For any accident with injury, third-party damage, or major own-damage, an FIR is mandatory. Police will guide you.
- Exchange details with other involved parties: name, phone, vehicle registration, driving licence number, insurance company.
- Do NOT admit fault on the spot. Stick to facts. Insurance companies decide liability, not parties.
- Keep all original documents (FIR copy, hospital bills, photos) — required for insurance claim.
Roadside Assistance — What Is Included
Most rentals include 24×7 roadside assistance for breakdowns. Typical coverage:
- Flat tyre — replacement vehicle dispatched, or guidance to nearby service
- Battery jump-start — operator vehicle dispatched in metros, otherwise local mechanic referred
- Fuel emergency — small fuel quantity delivered (charges apply)
- Mechanical breakdown — towing to nearest authorised garage; replacement car arranged within 4-8 hours in major cities
- Lockout — keys locked inside? Operator dispatches with master key (charges apply)
Confirm the roadside assistance contact number is saved on your phone before starting any outstation trip.
Pre-Drive Safety Checklist (5 Minutes)
Even with insurance, prevention beats cure. Run this check at delivery:
- Tyres — tread depth above 3mm, no visible cuts, even pressure (32-35 psi front, 33-36 psi rear typically)
- Brakes — first 2 minutes of driving, test brakes at low speed. Note any squealing, vibration, soft pedal.
- Steering — should not feel loose at highway speed. Slight pull to one side indicates alignment issue — flag immediately.
- Lights — headlights low/high, brake, indicators, hazard, fog lights all working
- Wipers + washer fluid — for monsoon season especially
- Horn — quick test
- Mirrors — both side and rearview adjustable, nothing cracked
- Spare wheel + jack + spanner — present and accessible
- First aid kit + reflective triangle — for SUVs/MUVs
- Documents — RC, insurance, PUC inside glove box
Outstation Safety — Extra Considerations
Long highway drives
- Take a 10-minute break every 2 hours. Driver fatigue causes the largest share of highway accidents.
- Keep headlights on during day if visibility is even slightly low.
- Plan fuel stops in advance — running on fumes on a remote highway is a real risk.
- Carry water, snacks, basic medicines.
Hill driving
- Use lower gears (2nd, 3rd) on descents — do not coast in neutral or ride brakes continuously. Brake fade is a real danger.
- Yield to uphill traffic on narrow roads (uphill vehicle has right of way).
- Turn off AC on steep climbs to give the engine maximum power.
- Monitor coolant temperature gauge — hill driving heats up the engine fast.
Night driving
- Avoid night driving on unfamiliar routes if possible — visibility, animal crossings, and oncoming high-beams make it harder.
- Keep low-beam unless on a deserted stretch. Switch to low-beam well before approaching vehicles.
- If tired, pull over to a safe well-lit area. Never push through drowsiness.
Rare But Important: Theft / Loss
If the rental car is stolen or seriously vandalised:
- File an FIR within 24 hours at the nearest police station.
- Inform the operator's emergency contact immediately.
- Provide a copy of FIR + your statement to the operator for insurance claim filing.
If you have the zero-deductible rider, your liability is capped (typically at the deposit amount, which starts from a base figure and scales by car class). Without it, theft cases can result in significant out-of-pocket exposure depending on insurance final settlement.
Common Misconceptions
"My personal car insurance covers rental cars."
Wrong. Personal motor insurance covers your own car only. Driving a rental is covered by the rental's own policy, not yours.
"I have credit card insurance from the bank."
Some premium credit cards offer travel insurance that includes car rental cover internationally — but rarely in India. Read the fine print before assuming.
"Small scratches don't count."
They do. Document every existing scratch on the rental agreement at delivery, with photos. Otherwise you may be billed for someone else's damage at return.
"Insurance will cover any damage I cause."
Not without the deductible. Without zero-deductible rider, you owe the deductible amount even on small damages. Without insurance entirely (very rare in India for legitimate operators), you owe the full repair cost.
Quick Action Card
Save these on your phone before any rental trip:
- Operator's 24×7 emergency number (from your rental agreement)
- Emergency: 112 (national emergency) / 100 (police) / 102 (ambulance)
- Rental agreement copy in your phone (PDF or photo)
- Driver licence + ID in DigiLocker
- List of nearest authorised service stations on route (operator can provide)
